O Ultima VIII: Pagan começa exatamente onde o Ultima VII terminou. O avatar é enviado para o mundo de Pagan pelo Guardião. Enquanto isso, o Guardião está assumindo o controle da Britânia e o avatar precisa encontrar a maneira de deixar Pagan e salvar a Britânia do Guardião. O mundo de Pagan é governado por quatro titãs que impedem qualquer viagem entre mundos. Para abrir um portal para a Britânia, o avatar deve destruir todos os quatro titãs e reivindicar seu poder.
