Monster Hunter Tri retrata um ecossistema onde os humanos coexistem com bestas fantásticas que patrulham tanto a terra quanto o mar. Com modos de cooperação online e offline, os jogadores podem se juntar a caçadas online até quatro pessoas ou jogar em duas pessoas na mesma TV para missões selecionadas. Os jogadores também têm a opção de enfrentar as missões do Monster Hunter Tri como uma experiência multiplayer com um único jogador acompanhado por Cha-Cha, uma parceira de caça IA cujas habilidades de rastreamento e armadilha serão inestimáveis durante a perseguição.
