Esta versão do jogo adota uma abordagem semelhante à entrada anterior, com Hogwarts sendo um mundo aberto que você pode explorar a seu bel-prazer entre completar os níveis necessários para avançar na história. A grande mudança desta vez é que Ron e Hermione foram promovidos ao status de jogáveis, permitindo jogar como todos os três membros da trindade. Cada um possui habilidades diferentes, e, dependendo do plataforma, você ou não poderá decidir quando trocar de personagem. Outra diferença é que o Quidditch não é mais jogável; voos em Buckbeak substituem a mecânica de voo necessária para avançar na história. Talvez devido ao material fonte ser mais emocional e menos focado em ação, As Estações do Cânone são majoritariamente apenas ressaltadas rapidamente.
