Soldiers of Fortune (Chaos Engine na Europa) é um shooter overhead de run-and-gun. Dezesseis níveis (em quatro grupos de quatro) aguardam os jogadores no jogo. O gameplay básico ocorre em um cenário ao ar livre, com pontes sobre rios e outros recursos nos mapas. As visuais são em estilo 'metálico e azul'. Existem seis personagens disponíveis no jogo, cada um com diferentes pontos fortes e fracos, e preços de início distintos.
