Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots é o último jogo canônico da série Metal Gear com Snake como personagem principal. O gameplay dos jogos anteriores foi mantido, juntamente com algumas novas funcionalidades, como a capacidade de rolar para trás e se esconder em lixeiras espalhadas pelo ambiente. A maior parte da história e das relações entre os personagens é explicada através de cutscenes longas, por isso recomenda-se conhecer as obras anteriores para compreender plenamente o enredo. O jogo também apresenta um complexo modo multiplayer chamado Metal Gear Online com missões originais baseadas nos aspectos de stealth dos jogos individuais.
