Alone in the Dark é um dos primeiros jogos de sobrevivência horror e o primeiro a utilizar modelos 3D sobrepostos em fundos pré-renderizados, o que se tornou uma inspiração chave para os próximos jogos de terror da época, como a franquia Resident Evil. O jogador pode usar várias armas, como pistolas, rifles, espadas e facas, embora seja possível matar a maioria dos inimigos com ataques corpo-a-corpo. Alguns oponentes podem ser derrotados resolvendo um quebra-cabeça específico, enquanto uma quantidade significativa de oponentes não pode ser morta em absoluto ou apenas com armas específicas.
